Summertime Delight

I'm still basking in the afterglow of the amazing selection of disco delights I heard at Amnesia last night, where Jacques Renault played one of the best disco sets I've heard in a long, long while. Needless to say, I covet his record collection; BIG TIME. I had a heck of a time trainspotting, and while that's a little bit frustrating, nothing compares to hearing great records for the first time out on a dance floor. (Let the hunt begin!) Luckily I have the luxury of rekindling a little bit of last night's magic today with his DFA Summer promo mix. While my love for them has fluctuated from red hot to lukewarm over the years, DFA records is still one of the definitive modern labels of my life's soundtrack, and this mix is probably the best promo mix of theirs yet. If I knew I could hear a new set of this calibre every time I went out, I'd probably leave my darling SF for NYC. (So please don't tell me if this is actually a possibility.) I hope Mr. Renault returns to SF soon, and has more mixes coming down the pipe. He's definitely one of my new favorite selectors.

Like the Wolf

Azari & III - Hungry For The Power

I know I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but this tune is toe-curlingly hot, and one of my favorites of the year so far. While I'm not particularly a huge fan of the 808, the vocals and warm chords totally do it for me. I'd love to experience this out in the wild, LOUD, as it already sounds great with a simple pair of earbuds. I can't find much out there about a proper 12" release, but I hope it's coming to a dancefloor near me soon. I wish Luomo's work was sounding more like this these days. It reminds me very much his classic The Present Lover, which is one of my favorites of this decade. If you haven't already, check out the mix that Tensnake did recently for Beats & Space, which includes Hungry For The Power and many more great moments, especially during the last 30 minutes or so.

Dominik Eulberg’s Sansula Video

I can't say I've been paying much attention to Techno lately due to the lack of quality releases and my hectic schedule, but I happened to come across this via Motionographer. While the track by itself is nothing too special, the video is quite pleasurable to the ears and eyes, as Mr. Eulberg's hypnotic melodies are combined with Dirk Rauscher & Kjell Rijntjes' ravey naturescapes.

Jam du Jour: Sinnamon

I had the pleasure of walking down Sunny (albeit chilly) Valencia St. this afternoon when this track was called up by the gods of shuffle-playback to grace my ears with its bouncy bassline, and nearly turn my brisk walk into a nice playful skip. Time to share the love with you, dear readers.

Eternal Phil Collins Damnation

I've never voluntarily listened to a Phil Collins song in my entire life, yet, somehow, through his various channels and outlets of darkness, he still managed to burn his awful DX7 melodies into my fragile, fledgling brain circuitry 20 years ago. I seem to have one of his top 40 terrors stuck in my head every 3-7 days; sometimes for hours on end, like a bad trip.

I've made a pie chart demonstrating how these instances break up by song to allow one to better understand why this phenomenon leaves me so beleaguered. If there was a very risky and costly procedure I could undergo that would allow me to live the rest of my life Phil Collins-free, I'd probably cut a check and ask if I could do it sometime after the holidays. There's only one lewd word that's not to be uttered in my household: it starts with an S and ends with an udio.

Does anyone want to go in on a class action law suit against the Phil Collins marketing machine of the mid 80's with me? Don't you think these servants of evil have caused us all an unreasonable amount of anguish over the past 23 years? Phil Collins everywhere! From the Laundromat, to the Grocery Store, to every single doctors office visit you've had since 1985; you can't avoid him. Even in the safety of your own home, his "hits" are bound to surface somehow. Face it, there's just no escaping this infiltration, no matter how hard you try. It's about time we've exorcised these demons once and for all.
