Falling Upgrade
After waiting for what seems like forever, especially with all of the woes I've been having with this sort of thing for the past three months, I just ordered a supersweet, suped up, new electronic brain, so Chantilly Bass may have a few added feautures- plus a podcast in the near future. Wish I could be more specific, and convey just how excited I am about this new set up, but I don't feel like getting sacked from my job at the mo' ;). Two days from now, I'll probably be wishing that I didn't have ESG(!), Derrick Carter, and a slew of other parties including the Sunset Halloween bay cruiserama to go to so that I'll have the chance to spend some quality time with my new paramour, but this city takes Halloween very seriously, so such obligations must be fufilled. I can't think of any place else I've ever lived where I've felt so compelled to have three different, unique and downright brilliant costumes, but here the pressure's on. I've managed to come up with two, but the third has still yet to be conceived. If you know how particular I am about my apparel, you can only imagine how I am with the whole Halloween costume thing.
Cassy- A Night to Remember
This track has been a favorite of some of my favorite local DJ's here in SF, but I just got around to inquiring about it in a state of sobriety where I actually remember that it's a Cassy record on Perlon. It's a lovely record that's safe to play for your "non-techno" friends, for it could probably make it's way on to the pop charts in a variety of countries- not including the U.S.A. This a gorgeous, solid vocal, taking the track to that magic place where one can't really tell what kind of genre it is, and it's so good that no one really cares.
Minimal Man- Treatment Feel (Soul Capsule vs. Tan-Ru remix)
Sometimes I think I really don't care much for house music anymore, but then something like this makes its way to my ears and the flame is rekindled once more. I never cared too much for the original version of this record, but this remix runs ever so deep without becoming the vapid, Zzzzz, dotcom house that seems to be the BPM of choice out here. The original was actually put out on The Guerilla label, which also put out the first ever techno (or early nineties progressive house, for that matter) compliation I ever bought at the tender age of 10 years old. I have a very soft spot for the label for that reason, and early 90's UK progressive house (which to me, is way more like techno than the progressive sounds of today) that my crazy dance teacher used to play for us when I was growing up at the dance studio, where I spent most of my childhood and adolescence from age 8-18, which might explain a few things. I was raised on this stuff, so bear with me.
Moodswings-Spiritual High (State of Independence)
WARNING: If you don't know what this record is, and you are expecting some sort of killer techno rush-the-head and move-your-feet-type thing, this won't be a good download for you. However, if you sometimes see the commercials for the ambient "mood" tracks from the early nineties and your ears perk up, then this might be up your alley. Here we have the 15 minute version of the epic classic produced by Vangelis and graced with the timeless vocal stylings of Chrissie Hynde. Kudos to Kwiz for reminding me of this one. Yes, this is the version with the Martin Luther King sample- deal with it.
I don't usually promote too many mixes here, but Jena Paradies' Latest Bitz mix is definitely worth downloading and having a listen to, as it's surely been on rotation around these parts.
