Juan Night in The Mission

Last night I ventured out of my cave to go hear the legendary Juan Atkins play a set at San Francisco's Elbo Room. With my disdain for Techno of the moment, I was intrigued to hear what one of the godfathers was playing these days. I had never been to a b.o.d.y.h.e.a.t. party, nor had I ever been to the Elbo Room, and I was pleasantly surprised by both in a good way. I arrived to find a jumpin' dance floor fueled by proper tunes, and set to work on drinking and dancing straight away. I haven't lost it on a dancefloor in a long while, and it felt wonderful to be in my element. I went wild when I heard Ten City's "That's the Way Love Is," and was surprised that the crowd ate it up as much as I did (I guess the fact that it was the acid mix didn't hurt). I don't know who the fellow was that played before Mr. Atkins, but he certainly had a nice repertoire and wasn't afraid to go against the grain. When Juan came on, he started off with The Quick's "Zulu" and proceeded into a history lesson ranging from ESG to A Number of Names, which I enjoyed for about 45 minutes until he went off the groove grid and the ZZzzzzz fest began in its usual fashion. However, when all was heard and done, I really liked the space (especially since it was within stumbling distance from my house) and the hour and a half or so of danceability made it worth it in the end.
